TAK Maps
Objective
The Tactical Assault Kit aka (TAKMAPS) is a standalone application for android to be deployed to the U.S. military and first responders that utilized mapping frameworks to provide real time GPS updates for soldiers and first responders on their mission. The objective was to create a better user experience for soldiers and first responders to be able to use the app in stressful and unorthodox situations. This application utilized more features than I have ever seen in an app which ranged from plotting courses to issuing hot zones. The primary challenge for this app was to make a fully customizable interface so the user could load certain UI loads for specific situations.
Process
By working directly with the military crew involved with this app I was able to get firsthand knowledge of all the technical and military terminology that would be necessary for this app. Observing the use the app in the field allowed me to see they had a unique way of holding the phones to mounts on their chest armor that created a limited amount of movement for them to access the app.
Results
Upon completion of the designs the personnel who used the app told me that it was above and beyond their expectations and using the app in the field would be dramatically easier.
